Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the U.S. She has worked as media critic since. She founded Feminist Frequency a website that hosts videos and commentary analyzing portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations in narratives from popular culture. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. In addition she has a mission to increase awareness about online harassment targeted at women, and other those who are marginalized. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university she became concerned about issues related to gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. In 2009, the ambitious young lady was harassed by the Internet for starting a web featuring a series about gender and videogames. It was not enough to stop her. It actually made her more committed as a feminist and media critique. Sarkeesian has been awarded several awards for her contributions to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning journalist. She is also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture gender representations.
